A Heritage of Excellence
Local #393 has been providing Apprentice instruction since 1941 and Journey-level training since 1961.
The Training Center was established in 1961. It started out with one classroom and a welding shop. Today the Pipe Trades Training Center is one of the leading high-tech training facilities of its kind in the country.
Housed in a state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot facility at 780 Commercial Street in San Jose since 1990, the Training Center has 48 classrooms and offers more Journey-level classes than any other center in America. Affiliated with a local community college, the Training Center offers a fully accredited program.
More than 57 instructors bring first-rate credentials and extensive field experience to the classroom. Most are United Association members currently working in the field. Others are from the chemical, electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering industry.
Each instructor shares a commitment to teaching and learning based on individual student needs. Instructors attend special courses provided by the UA Instructor Training Program to stay current with changes in the industry. In addition, our instructors create many of their own teaching materials, giving students up-to-the-minute, state-of-the-art information on codes, materials, and processes not found in traditional textbooks.
