Minimum Qualifications for the Apprenticeship Program
Applicants for Apprenticeship training must be at least 17 at the time of application, and must have a high school diploma or equivalent. There is no maximum age. Since some of the work in these trades involves heavy, physical labor, some of it out-of-doors, good health and physical skills are essential.
How to Apply for Apprenticeship Training
Each applicant must appear in person at the Pipe Trades Training Center, 780 Commercial Street, San Jose, during the period applications are being accepted. To receive application information, applicants must present a high school diploma or acceptable G.E.D. Certificate, valid drivers license, and three personal references.
If accepted for training, apprentices are scheduled for a series of entry-level examinations. These include:
- Math Test -- Basic math skills up to, but not including, algebra
- Screening Test -- Upon passing the math test, applicants are tested to determine abilities in spacial relations perception, verbal and abstract reasoning, numerical ability and mechanical reasoning
- Oral Interview -- An appearance before representatives of the JATC to determine an applicant's interest, ambition, attitude and alertness
Upon passing these examinations, an applicant is placed on the Training Center's waiting list based on application period and composite of examination scores attained.
The Apprenticeship Program is committed to equal opportunity in recruitment, selection, employment and training.
